What to Wear on Karwa Chauth: Outfit and Jewellery Guide for the Whole Day
In this article:
Most Karwa Chauth guides tell you what to wear for the photographs. Very few account for the fact that you will be wearing it from before sunrise until well past eight in the evening, without food or water, and that some of it will be uncomfortable by hour ten.
This guide does both. The outfit and the jewellery, planned around the actual shape of the day.
Karwa Chauth 2026: The Timings, and Why They Matter for Dressing
Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October. The day has a fixed rhythm:
|
Stage |
Approximate time |
|---|---|
|
Sargi, the pre-dawn meal |
3:30 AM to 5:30 AM |
|
Fast begins at sunrise |
around 6:31 AM |
|
Puja muhurat |
around 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM |
|
Moonrise |
around 8:17 PM in Delhi |
Moonrise varies quite a bit across the country. Mumbai is closer to 9:00 PM, and Ahmedabad sits between the two. Confirm your local moonrise time against a panchang closer to the date rather than relying on any single figure, including ours.
The reason the timings matter for dressing is simple. That is roughly fourteen hours between the fast beginning and breaking, split across four quite different stages: an early morning at home, a long fasting day with mehndi and preparation, an hour or more sitting cross-legged for the katha, and then standing outside holding a thali at moonrise. One outfit and one set of jewellery has to carry all four, or you plan for the change.
One practical note on timing. Karwa Chauth is ten days before Diwali this year, so the courier and delivery rush is already building through October. If you are ordering anything, the first half of the month is comfortable and the last week is not. Common ring sizes go first, every single year.
The Outfit: Saree, Lehenga or Suit
Red is the traditional colour, and the reason is straightforward: it carries the associations of marriage and auspiciousness that the day is built around. Maroon, rani pink and magenta sit in the same family and photograph beautifully under diya light. Black and white are traditionally avoided, though both work perfectly well as a small accent inside a red outfit.
Beyond colour, the choice comes down to which part of the day the outfit has to survive.
A saree is the most traditional option and the right one for the evening puja. Silk, Banarasi, or a lighter art silk in red or maroon. If you want to know how to wear a saree on Karwa Chauth without spending the evening adjusting it: pin the pleats rather than relying on the tuck, choose a blouse you can raise your arms in because you will be rotating the thali in the katha circle, and pin the pallu back before you pick up the diya. Pre-stitched and ready-to-wear sarees exist and are a sensible choice on a fasting day. We do not sell them, but plenty of people find them easier to manage.
A lehenga gives the bridal weight that suits a first Karwa Chauth. Silk, velvet or georgette with zari or gota patti work, and a lighter dupatta so it does not become a burden by evening.
An Anarkali or a well-cut suit is the honest answer for anyone who will be moving around the house all day. Chiffon, georgette or cotton silk, comfortable at the waist, festive enough for the puja.
On fabric generally: October is still warm in most of India, and you are not drinking water. Anything that breathes will serve you better than anything that impresses.
Solah Shringar: The Sixteen Adornments, and the Six That Do the Work
Tradition gives a married woman sixteen adornments for a day like this. Here they are:

Now the part most guides leave out: almost nobody wears all sixteen, and nobody expects you to. The Solah Shringar is a tradition to draw from, not a checklist to complete, and which items a family emphasises varies by region and household.
If you are choosing, six or seven carry the look almost entirely.
Bindi, sindoor and kajal cost almost nothing and do a surprising amount. They are the elements people actually read as the Karwa Chauth look.
Earrings are the single hardest-working piece. They frame the face in every photograph taken that evening, and they are the piece closest to your attention through the day. Worth thinking about properly, which is why our full earrings range is where most people start.

Explore CollectionA necklace or mangalsutra anchors the neckline. If you wear a mangalsutra daily, that is already one of the sixteen.
Bangles or a kada at the wrist. Traditionally red and green glass bangles, though metal works equally well and is considerably kinder over a long day.
A ring, and mehndi. Both personal, both traditional, both easy.
A gajra if your hair is up, which costs very little and finishes the look better than another piece of jewellery would.
That leaves maang tikka, nath, bajubandh, kamarbandh and bichua as genuinely optional. Lovely if you want them, and no cause for concern if you skip them. In the interest of being straight with you: our online range covers earrings, necklaces and pendants, bangles and kadas, rings and anklets. For a maang tikka or a nath you will need to look elsewhere, and that is fine.
Silver on the Most Bridal Day of the Year
Every Karwa Chauth guide assumes gold, kundan and polki. Worth questioning, for three reasons.
Silver reads cleaner against red. Gold and a saturated red sit close together on the warm side, and under diya light and warm indoor bulbs they can flatten into each other. Polished silver and CZ reflect against red rather than blending into it, which is why the stones read brighter in evening photographs. A coloured-stone piece like the Ruby Style Silver Ring works differently again, picking up the colour of the outfit directly rather than contrasting with it.

Shop the Ruby Styled Silver Ring. This bold 925 silver floral statement piece offers the heavy, traditional look of an heirloom ring, perfect for weddings and festive wear.
Two-tone bridges a gold-embroidered saree. If your saree carries heavy gold zari and you do not want a full metal clash, a gold-plated silver piece solves it. The Gold-Plated Silver Single Row Tennis Anklet at around ₹2,400 is a good example: silver underneath, gold on the surface, sitting comfortably with zari work.

And the practical argument. For most women, gold jewellery lives in a locker and comes out twice a year. A silver piece bought for Karwa Chauth gets worn again at Diwali, through the wedding season, and on ordinary Wednesdays. That is a different kind of value.
Now the honest part. If your family expects gold on this particular day, wear gold. Traditions around Karwa Chauth are specific and personal, and no styling argument is worth an awkward conversation with your mother-in-law. Our gemstone silver range is there if you want the alternative, not as a correction to what your family does.

Dressing Through the Day: Four Stages
Sargi and the early morning
Keep it to nothing. A pair of studs at most, since you will likely go back to bed or straight into the kitchen. Something like the Silver Round CZ Stud Earrings at around ₹1,100 can stay in from Sargi right through to moonrise if you want one piece that does not need thinking about.

Mehndi and the fasting hours
Take rings and bangles off before the henna goes on, and leave them off until it is completely dry. Putting a ring back over damp mehndi ruins the design and marks the metal, and this is the most common small disaster of the day.
Otherwise, stay comfortable. This is not the stretch to be in a heavy saree. You are applying mehndi, arranging the puja thali, and possibly working. Save the outfit.
The katha and the puja
The full look goes on here, not at nine in the morning. This is the stretch that gets photographed and the one that matters.
One thing to think about before you sit down: an hour or more cross-legged with a full bangle stack and a kamarbandh is genuinely uncomfortable. Fewer bangles, slightly looser, and a waist chain you can breathe in. If you are wearing something with real presence at the ears, this is the moment for it. A pair like the Sapphire Blue Oval Halo Drop Earrings at around ₹1,500 has the scale for the puja circle without the weight of a heavy jhumka.

Moonrise
Both your hands will be busy. Thali in one, chalni raised in the other, a diya somewhere in between, and then water offered to the moon. Rings on every finger become a nuisance at exactly this point, and a long dangling anklet catches on everything while you walk out to the terrace.
Plan for the pieces you want in the photographs to be the ones that leave your hands free.
Jewellery That Survives Fourteen Hours Without Water
This is the section nobody writes, and it is the one people at the counter ask about every October.
The earlobe complains first. A heavy jhumka feels fine at six in the evening and quite different by ten. If you want scale, look for a design that spreads its weight rather than concentrating it, and check that the back grips properly before you leave the house.
Bangles sit differently across a long fast. Hands swell slightly through the day, which is why something that felt fine in the morning can press against the wrist bone by evening. Fewer bangles, slightly looser, is the practical answer. An open kada you can adjust beats a fixed bangle for exactly this reason. The Dual Circle Silver Open Kada at around ₹3,300 slips on and off without a clasp, which also means you can take it off during the katha and put it back for the photographs.

Keep chains shorter. Anything long swings when you bend for the puja and gets caught under a dupatta.
Anklets should sit close. A close-fitting chain like the Sterling Silver Box Chain Anklet with Geometric Link Charms at around ₹3,000 stays where you put it. Long dangling charms are lovely in photographs and a liability when you are walking out to see the moon in the dark. Our kada collection has the adjustable designs that suit a day like this best.

A word that matters more than any of the above. A nirjala vrat asks a great deal of the body. If you feel unwell, take the jewellery off and sit down, because comfort comes well before appearance. And if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or you live with diabetes, low blood pressure, or any condition affected by going without food and water, speak to your doctor before keeping the fast and consider a modified one if that is what they advise. The intent behind the day is honoured either way.
First Karwa Chauth, Second, and the Tenth
The first
Well covered everywhere, so briefly: this is the one year to bring back full bridal weight. The wedding lehenga or saree, the fullest version of the Solah Shringar you are comfortable in, fresh mehndi, and the baya presented to your mother-in-law after the puja. If you are nervous, the only real advice is to choose something you can sit down in.
The second, and every one after
Here is the question nobody answers. The wedding outfit has been worn. The pressure of the first year is gone. And you have another forty Octobers to dress for.
This is where a small set of good pieces starts to matter more than one big outfit. Two or three silver pieces you actually like, restyled each year against a different saree, will carry you further than a heavy set bought once and worn twice. A piece like the Single Pearl Elegant Necklace is the sort of thing that works on the puja evening and then keeps working, which is the whole point. If rings are more your thing, our guide to styling silver rings goes deeper into stacking and pairing.

And repeating an outfit is completely fine. Change the jewellery, change the blouse, wear a different dupatta. Nobody at the katha is keeping a record.
One more thing, in case you have arrived here from the other side of the day. If you are the one buying rather than the one fasting, our guide to the best Karwa Chauth gift for your wife covers what to choose, how to handle the size problem, and what she will actually wear afterwards.
After the Fast: Looking After What You Wore
By the time you break the fast, your jewellery has had a harder day than it usually does. Diya smoke, sindoor at the hairline, perfume, mehndi residue, and fourteen hours against skin.
Silver dulls faster after a day like that, and it is worth knowing that this is normal. Sterling silver reacts with sulphur compounds in air, sweat and cosmetics. It is reversible and it is not a fault in the piece.
Three things handle it. Wipe each piece with a soft dry cloth the same night rather than leaving it until morning, because what sits overnight does the visible damage. Use mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft brush for a proper clean rather than anything abrasive. And store pieces in separate pouches instead of loose in a drawer, where they scratch each other.
Every piece we sell carries a BIS Hallmark for 925 purity and comes with lifetime re-plating, which is the reason a piece worn this hard is still wearable next October. Returns and exchange are straightforward if something is not right; the current window is on our returns policy page.
