Navratri 2026: Dates and the Nine Colours
Shardiya Navratri 2026 runs from Sunday, 11 October to Monday, 19 October. Ghatasthapana falls on the first day, Durga Ashtami on 18 October, Navami on 19 October, and Dussehra follows on Tuesday, 20 October.

If you are only planning the opening stretch, the colour to wear on the first day of Navratri is orange, the second day of Navratri is white and the third day is red. Those three set the tone for the rest.
The sequence changes every year because it follows the weekday on which the festival begins, which is why last year's list will not help you this year. It also means which colour dress to wear in Navratri is a question worth asking fresh each October rather than reusing an old chart.
One honest note before you screenshot the table above. Published colour lists do not always agree with each other, and you will find respected sources putting grey on Day 4 instead of Day 7, or swapping pink and purple around. If your family follows a particular panchang or a local mandal shares its own list, go with that. Nobody at the garba ground is auditing you.
Outfit First: Silhouettes and Fabrics That Let You Dance
The real question is not which garment is prettiest. It is whether you plan to dance.
If you are dancing, a chaniya choli or a flared sharara set is built for it. The skirt flare creates the spin, and the fabric is light enough to move through three hours of garba without turning into a workout. How to Wear a Dupatta for Navratri
The dupatta is the cheapest way to change an outfit, and it is also the piece most likely to come loose halfway through a garba round. There are four styles of wearing a dupatta for Navratri worth knowing:
Pinned at both shoulders. The safest drape for dancing. Pin it flat at each shoulder and it will not shift no matter how much you spin.
Cape style. Both ends falling behind you, secured at the shoulders. Leaves your arms completely free, which matters for dandiya.
Pleated at the waist. Bring one end across the chest and pleat it into the waistband or under a kamarbandh. Traditional look, fully hands-free.
Over the head. For temple visits and morning aarti rather than dancing. Pin it at the crown and once at the shoulder so it stays put while you bend for pranam.
For a chaniya choli specifically, one end tucks into the chaniya waistband and the other pins to the blouse shoulder. Lighter chiffon and georgette dupattas are far easier to manage than heavy embroidered ones. Plenty of experienced dancers skip the dupatta while dancing and drape it back on for the aarti.

What Actually Survives Four Hours of Garba
This is the section nobody writes, and it is the one people ask about at the counter every October.
Earrings. Loose push-back studs work themselves off during spins, and the back is usually gone before you notice the earring is. Chains. Anything long swings, and a swinging pendant hits your collarbone on every third beat. Keep chains shorter for dancing nights and save the longer layered look for the evenings you are mostly sitting.
