You have probably seen it without knowing what to call it. A pair of jhumkas where the carving reads almost black in the grooves and bright at the edges. That is oxidised silver, and it is one of the most misunderstood things in Indian jewellery. Not because the idea is complicated, but because the word gets attached to pieces that contain no silver whatsoever.
What Oxidised Silver Actually Is
Oxidised silver is ordinary 925 sterling silver whose surface has been deliberately darkened. It is not a different grade of silver, not a lesser metal, and not a substitute for the real thing. The metal underneath is the same 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper alloy used in every polished sterling piece.
The darkening itself is a thin layer of silver sulphide that forms on the outermost surface when the metal is exposed to a sulphur compound. That layer is the whole difference. It is not paint, not enamel, and not a plating applied on top. The silver itself changes colour at the surface while everything below stays exactly as it was. One technical footnote worth knowing, because it explains a lot of the confusion around the term. The process is not really oxidation. Oxidation involves oxygen, and this reaction is driven by sulphur. Why It Looks So Different From Polished Silver

Most explanations stop at "it looks antique". That describes the effect without explaining it, and the explanation is the interesting part.
The piece is not darkened in patches. It goes into the solution and comes out uniformly dark, top to bottom. What happens next is the actual craft: the jeweller buffs the raised surfaces back to bright silver and leaves the dark layer sitting in the grooves, the carvings, the filigree and the recessed areas.
That contrast is what your eye reads as depth.
On a uniformly polished piece, light bounces off every surface at once, and fine detail tends to flatten out. A delicately carved motif can disappear into its own shine. How the Finish Is Made
The sequence is straightforward, and knowing it helps you judge what you are looking at.
The piece is made and finished first. Cast or fabricated, stones set, polished as it normally would be. Only then does it get oxidised, which is why the process suits detailed work rather than plain surfaces.
It is then dipped in or brushed with a sulphur solution. Liver of sulphur, a potassium sulphide compound, is the usual choice. The surface starts changing within seconds and reaches full depth in a minute or two, and the jeweller controls the timing to land anywhere from a soft warm grey to a matte gunmetal black.
Here is a detail almost nobody mentions: at controlled strength, the reaction does not only produce black. It can bring up blues, purples, browns and even reddish tones before it goes fully dark. That range is part of why oxidised pieces vary so much between makers, and why two "oxidised" items can look nothing like each other.
Then comes the buffing, which is where skill separates good work from mediocre. Too little and the piece reads as one flat dark mass. Too much and the contrast is gone. Getting it right is a judgement call made by hand on every single piece.
Some makers seal the finish with a light protective layer to slow the fading. Many leave it bare on the reasoning that the way it wears in is part of the appeal.
Oxidised, Polished, and German Silver: The Comparison That Matters
Almost every guide on this subject compares oxidised silver to polished sterling silver, and stops there. That comparison is easy, and it also misses the thing most likely to cost you money.
A great deal of jewellery sold in India as "oxidised" is German silver.
German silver, also sold as nickel silver, white metal or alpacca, is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. It contains no silver at all. None. The name refers to the appearance, not the contents. It takes an oxidised finish beautifully, holds fine detail well, and is genuinely popular for good reasons, so this is not an argument against it. It simply is not silver, and it should not be priced or described as though it were.

You will also come across pieces described as oxidised silver plated, and that phrase means something specific. Plated means a base metal core with a thin coating of silver applied over it, then darkened. It is a third category again, and it behaves differently from both of the others: once the plating wears through at the edges, the base metal shows.
The practical takeaway is simple. "Oxidised" describes a finish and tells you nothing at all about the metal underneath. The two questions are separate, and only one of them affects what you are paying for.
How to Tell If Oxidised Jewellery Is Really Silver
There is no single foolproof test, but four checks together will tell you most of what you need to know.
Look for the marks
Genuine sterling should carry a 925 stamp, usually on the inside of a band, on the back of a pendant or on the post of an earring. In India, look for the BIS hallmark alongside it, which is the standards mark for precious metal purity. A piece with neither is telling you something by omission.
Weigh it in your hand
This is the check that becomes second nature once you have handled both. Silver is dense, and German silver is not. A pair of oxidised earrings that look substantial and feel like nothing is almost certainly not silver. If you own one piece of real sterling, hold it in one hand and the piece you are considering in the other.
Read what the seller actually says
Not what the product is called, what the material is stated to be. A seller working in sterling will say 925 sterling silver somewhere on the page, plainly. Treat the price as information
Oxidised earrings at a couple of hundred rupees are not sterling silver, because the metal alone costs more than that. This is not about a seller cutting margins. It is arithmetic.
One honest caveat. A stamp can be faked, and a hallmark can be applied dishonestly. No check you can perform in thirty seconds beats buying from a seller who states the purity clearly, backs it with certification, and is still contactable in a year if something is wrong.

How Oxidised Silver Wears Over Time
The finish will fade. Anyone selling you oxidised silver without saying so has left out the most useful thing about it.
Because the darkening lives only on the surface, friction removes it. That happens at very different rates depending on what the piece is:
Fastest: rings, especially the inside of the band and the outer high points where your hand touches everything. Bangles and kadas, particularly the inner surface. Bracelets that rub against a sleeve or a watch.
Slowest: earrings, pendants and anything that mostly hangs. A pendant back can hold its colour for years because nothing ever touches it.
What is worth understanding is where it fades from. The high points go first, since they get the contact, while the recessed areas hold their colour longest. Because the recesses are what give the design its definition, a piece that has faded for two years often still reads clearly. It looks worn in rather than worn out, and plenty of people prefer it that way.
Two practical points. A jeweller can re-oxidise a faded piece, and it is a quick, inexpensive job rather than a repair. And a darkened surface hides scratches that would show up immediately on a mirror finish, which means an oxidised ring worn daily for two years can genuinely look better than a polished one given the same treatment.
Caring for Oxidised Silver Without Ruining It
One rule governs everything else here. On oxidised silver, the dark layer is the design. Anything sold to remove tarnish will remove the finish, because as far as the product is concerned, the finish is tarnish.
That rules out more than people expect.
Do not use: silver dip or liquid silver cleaner, silver polishing cloths, metal polish of any kind, baking soda paste, the baking soda and aluminium foil method, toothpaste, lemon juice, vinegar, or an ultrasonic cleaner. Every one of these is designed to strip a dark layer off silver, and every one of them will succeed.
What does work: lukewarm water with a drop of mild, unscented soap. A very soft brush on the raised areas only, never scrubbed into the grooves where the patina lives. Pat dry immediately with a soft cloth rather than leaving it to air dry, and never soak a piece for long stretches.
Day to day: perfume, deodorant and hairspray go on first, jewellery last. Take pieces off before showering, swimming or exercising, since chlorine and prolonged sweat both work against the finish.
Storage: separate cloth pouches or a lined box, one piece per pouch so nothing rubs. Somewhere dry rather than sealed in plastic, which can trap moisture against the metal.
If a piece has already been polished by mistake, nothing is ruined. The silver is intact and it can be re-oxidised. It is just a trip to a jeweller rather than a fix at home.
